When I Get Recognition!

When will I be happy with others? When I get recognition! But we are never satisfied. Only the gospel can make us happy with others! In the gospel we find that God values us, delights in us, and gives us glory beyond our wildest imagination. The gospel makes us so happy that we are free to humble ourselves and follow Jesus by serving others, which makes us even happier!

When I'm Understood

To experience lasting happiness requires unity, especially in the fact of opposition. As we try to live in unity, wisdom tells us that the first step is to seek to understand others before we seek to be understood. Practicing this creates unity within the church and even with the world, and is the key to us knowing true happiness.

When My Circumstances Work Out Right

From his prison cell, Paul looks at his situation and shows us that happiness doesn’t have to be based on our circumstances. His bad, mixed, and future circumstances actually fill him with happiness because he has allowed the gospel and his passion to inform how he responds.

When the Government _____ (fill in the blank)

Chained in prison to a Roman guard, stuck where he cannot fulfill his calling to preach the gospel to the nations, facing a trial before Caesar that could result in death… from his situation Paul shows that the power of the gospel brings a happiness that conquers whatever the government or any of “the powers that be” can do to us. He doesn’t complain about his circumstances, but rejoices in what God is doing in the lives of others and participates in God’s work through prayer.

Heaven At Work: Restoring Heaven On Earth

Driven by his search for satisfaction (because his job has not made him happy), Zacchaeus seeks Jesus, but discovers that Jesus is already seeking him. Their encounter illustrates God’s work as Restorer—He fixes the things that are broken in the world. At the 4th Level of Integrating Faith and Work, companies and jobs that fix broken things in life image this restoring work of God. At the 5th Level of Integrating Faith and Work, Zachaeus becomes an example for how we all can redeem and fix what is broken in our own professions, companies, and industries.

Heaven At Work: Creating Heaven On Earth

Our work is not merely a means to an end, our work itself images God in the world. In this sermon, we see that many companies and jobs image God as creator. As we make connections between our work and God’s, we learn that our work is significant, we become better employees, our work becomes community service, and our work begins to shape and fashion the world today to look more like the New Heavens and Earth.

The Gospel motivates and empowers us to live a life so attractive that it softens people’s hearts to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The salvation of the lost brings great glory to God.

Bringing Heaven To Work

Your work matters to God. A 6-level introduction to understanding a biblical approach to work. Integrating our faith and work begins with bringing heaven to work. We experience the kingdom of Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit. This saves us from the effects of “the kingdom of Adam” and enables us to bring Jesus’ kingdom with us to our work.

Conflict And Community: Jesus' Story And Your Story

Each of you has a story which has been written on your heart by your experiences, family, teachers, friends and culture. This story shapes everything about you: how you view God, how you respond to the news, how you spend your time and money, how you relate to other people, and how you view yourself. Connecting your story with the true story of the Risen Jesus gives you a radically new story of death, life and yourself.

Conflict And Community: Can You See Jesus When He Comes?

Into the post-crucifixion confusion and questions of the disciples, the risen Jesus appears to two disciples and brings the joy and blessings of the New Covenant to them through the Word and the Sacrament. Jesus shows that the whole Bible speaks of and points to him in his role as the Savior, and we (and the disciples) see that Jesus is most clearly revealed through the elements of the Lord Supper.

Conflict And Community: Wondering About the Resurrection

Was Jesus really raised from the dead? The bodily resurrection is the essence of Christianity, and yet Jesus’ friends who first heard about it didn’t believe it! As Luke presents them in their confusion, space is created for us who either doubt or don’t understand the implications of the resurrection for our lives. The testimony and the empty tomb call us to bring our questions and wonder out loud as we seek answers for ourselves.

Conflict and Community: Saying No About God

As Peter’s faith crumbles under social and religious pressure, he denies Jesus three times and he invites us to ask ourselves, how do we respond when we fail God or other people? How do we learn the balance between not denying our new identity in Jesus and not becoming overbearing or insensitive to others with regards to matters of faith?

Conflict and Community: Saying No To God?

The impending doom of the cross is closing in on Jesus, so he cries to God out of the stress and fear of the darkness that lays before him. As he does, we are awed as we see the honesty and passion of Jesus’ prayer life. We are moved to worship as we see that the darkness he entered was the darkness of our own suffering, judgment, and struggles. We are called to enter into the darkness and suffering of those around us, seeking to cause the sun of God’s kingdom to rise higher over our communities and our city.

The Last Supper

Jesus wants us to take advantage of trouble. His kingdom was established by His trouble, and it is advanced through our trouble. When we face trouble, instead of fear, anger and despair, Jesus wants us to have courage and poise. How? By putting on God's worldview, which let's us understand the true cause of Jesus' death; By knowing that the purpose of Jesus' death was to set you free; And to know the power of Jesus' death which gives you a completely new identity in Christ.

Conflict and Community: Predicting the End

Jesus pronounces judgment on the religious leaders of his day and those who follow them by predicting the destruction of the Temple and the city of Jerusalem. In his prediction, we see how he borrows imagery from the Old Testament and we learn how to interpret cosmological signs in Scripture. Before the coming destruction, Jesus also predicts an intense period of suffering for his people. In this, he gives us both instruction and promises that will strengthen us in our trials and enable us to be a blessing to others.

Conflict and Community: Are You Living for Today or Tomorrow?

In this third and final round of conflict, Jesus meets the head of the religious elite: the Sadducees. As they confront Jesus about the resurrection, we see the problems with living for today, the hope of living for tomorrow, and how the future is the key to making a difference in the present.

Community in the Midst of Conflict

Jesus is challenged by the religious leaders of his day, “Who do you think you are?” As Jesus answers this question, he creates both conflict and community. His answer gets to our hearts—where do we really stand? His answer creates both conflict with hypocritical leadership and community among those who have experienced the indescribable grace that he offers to all.

Peter's New Year Resolution

The New Year often drives us to make resolutions which we later break. If we keep the resolutions, we feel good about ourselves but perhaps look down on others who failed. If we do not keep our resolutions, we tend to beat ourselves up. The Gospel breaks this cycle but causing us to focus on Jesus’ performance and what he has done for us rather than what He can do to us. Peter’s failure and Jesus’ redemption illustrate the Gospel.

Your Year For God's Kingdom

As we consider resolutions and goals for 2009, we are struck with the guilt of failed past resolutions and the inner desire to see that we are growing. The key is to make goals and resolutions that you know God will bless. Jesus’ ministry gives us two resolutions that we all should have for 2009. Plus, it shows us how we can ensure that our progress in these resolutions will last.

The Way of Peace

In the midst of our chaotic, busy American lives, we need to stop and take time to connect with the Lord. Following the example of Psalm 46, it is crucial that we regularly put our lives on pause to seek the Lord, remember that He is God, and believe the promises of the Gospel. This pattern of seeking God's presence is the the secret to unlocking the peace that the Gospel promises.

The Marks of a God Approved Leader - A Good Lesson From a Bad Leader

How do we fix society? Leadership! But what is leadership? Influence! Each of us is a leader for God has placed each of us in relationships where we have influence. King Saul was a leader however, instead of using his influence for good, he used it for evil. Instead of fixing society he was making it worse. And so God rejected him as king. From this bad example we learn four marks of a God approved leader.

Fixing Society, Step Six: It's All About God

We have a choice when we are confronted with failure in ourselves or in San Diego. Jonathan shows that faith can reverse the worst of circumstances and make real the kingdom of God in our lives and in society. Saul shows that our jealousy and need for control can cause us to lash out and destroy the power of God in our lives and ruin the kingdom work of others. As we see Saul’s downward spiral continue, we are encouraged by Jonathan’s example and by Jesus, to whom Jonathan points.

Saul’s first crisis in leadership comes when he is ready to go into battle but he has been told to wait at Gilgal until Samuel shows up to offer a sacrifice. This story shows us the tragedy that takes place when we doubt God’s word and head off on our own. We ultimately need a leader who will stand firm in crisis and trust God.

Fixing Society, Step Five: Love the One You're With

During the election season, Christians need wisdom to know how to marry faith and politics. 1Samuel 12 brings a close to the political tension between Samuel and the People and God over whether or not Israel should have an earthly king. The conversation between Samuel and the people of Israel demonstrate the importance of character and a willingness to work together to navigate the messiness of life. The sermon ends with four practical steps that ought to govern our own political discussions and practices if we are to seek unity in the church and peace in the city.

Worldliness: Israel Asks for a King

Worldiness is contrasted with biblical spirituality. It is looking at the world through a cultural grid unillumined by the Holy Spirit and represents a view of life directly at odds with scripture. Worldliness causes one to look at men rather than God; it causes us to reject God and blinds us to what we truly need.

Potential For Greatness

Saul is chosen as the first king of Israel and these early chapters show the potential he had to be a great king. He was physically impressive, teachable, changed by God, used by God, brave and forgiving. However, the latter part of his reign was completely different from his early potential. This shows us appearances can be deceiving, the roots of sin are in each of us, and we need a true and faithful King.

Fixing Society, Step Four: Returning to the Lord

As the fourth step toward healing the brokenness of society, we learn that when we or others fall away from God, God calls us to return to him by giving up our false worship, letting go of self-dependence, and confessing our sins. As we commit ourselves to him, our commitment will be tested, and we need Jesus to strengthen us to stay faithful.

The Ark of the Covenant

God's glory is real and awesome. This text shows that God's glory is at odds with man's contempt, religiosity and wilfulness. We show contempt for God's glory when we are hypocritical, superstitious or presumptuous. Our wilfulness and innate desire to find significance beyond the finite and material can also work against us understanding God's glory. But God's glory is fully expressed in the person of Jesus Christ and appreciated through the Gospel.

Fixing Society, Step Three: The Call to Lead

As God calls and trains Samuel to replace Eli, the leader of the nation of Israel, we see how God calls and trains us to become leaders and influencers in our world today. The key to Samuel’s (and our) successful leadership is (1) to know God personally, and (2) to know his word. As we gain the experiential knowledge of these two things, we will be used to provide leadership in the areas of life and society that need to be healed and restored.

Fixing Society, Step Two: Church Leadership

As the second step toward healing the brokenness of society, God confronts the hypocrisy of the church, bringing severe judgment against its leadership. Eli and his sons are confronted, convicted, and cast out for their flagrant abuses of religious power. Hope begins to emerge from the brokenness of Israel’s leadership as Samuel’s quiet but faithful service demonstrates that God has plans to bring about the longed for healing and redemption of the nation.

After Hannah is blessed with the birth of Samuel, she dedicates him and then offers a prayer of thanksgiving to God. She rejoices over his deliverance, rests in his control, trusts in his knowledge of her situation, and hopes in God’s plan. We are encouraged to do all those things as well, but the focus of the passage is the “anointed one,” Jesus Christ.

Fixing Society, Step One: The Cry that Saves

As Hannah deals with the anguish of a hopeless life, she is driven to pour out her pain-wracked heart before God. God hears her cry, and she is granted the desire of her heart, but only because she re-centered her life by putting God first. Hannah’s cry invites us to follow her into the presence of God with our own heart cries, and it calls us to search our own hearts to make sure that there is nothing in our lives that we are putting before God.

The son God provides for her is also the answer to the larger problem of Israel, who desperately needs a leader to free them from the brokenness of their society. God changes societies in response to the cries of individuals.

Welcome to the Table

David shows kindness to Jonathan’s son, Mephibosheth, by searching him out, blessing him with Saul’s inheritance, and including him in the royal family. A wonderful story about how God’s grace in the gospel takes initiative to love us, bless us even when we don’t deserve it and can’t repay it, and then adopt us into God’s family.

The Armor Of God

In concluding this extraordinary letter, Paul sums up all of the power and blessings that come from the gospel in this extended metaphor of a Christian battling against the forces of evil and darkness in the world. He combines the image of a roman soldier with the Old Testament imagery of God himself coming to defend and fight for his own people. Christians are to wear this same armor so that they can resist the power of the devil and push back the darkness in our world today.

God’s vision for humanity is that people would overcome the darkness that plagues the world. To do that, people need to know God’s will and be filled with his power. Both of these come when people understand the bible, and experience it in community and worship.
